The North Gate at Housesteads Fort. Hadrian’s Wall had seventeen major forts each with a garrison of 500 to 1000 men. Houseteads is in the cenral section and was built on the line of the wall. This enabled soldiers to deploy rapidly through the gates to face a threat from the north if required.
